Down on the Farm Newsletter Number One

20/11/2018

Over the next year we will be bringing you updates from our Down on the Farm film makers who will be 'out in the field' in north Devon creating a very special collection of short documentary films.

THE FILM MAKERS

Congratulations to our film makers!
Florence Browne from Cornwall
Holly Black & Joanne Barker from Bristol
James Cox from Devon
Linda Mason from Hampshire
Michael Balsdon from Devon
Joanna Ryan from Devon (edit - Jo joined the fold in July 2019)

The commissionees were selected by an independent panel of professionals, from the film/tv, heritage and environment industries, out of a field of over 40 applicants aged between 18 and 72

THE FILMS

Picture
James - As political turmoil surrounding the Brexit result takes hold with cheaper, lower quality products set to be imported from abroad, affecting the future of British agriculture; farmer Wayne Copp is preparing to face Brexit and ready his children as they prepare to become the 5th generation to work his farm.

Linda - Rose Manning was born in 1945 and has been in farming all her life. Rose is the eldest daughter of 3 girls and she took the role of future farmer in the absence of her parents having a son. Lifelong Farmer will be told through memories of Rose, through informal conversations whilst she is working with the animals and in the kitchen.

Florence - The film will focus on the Eveleigh family's recently begun 'meat box' scheme, an enterprise which sees them take their own livestock from their farm on Exmoor to the local abattoir in Combe Martin and produce high-quality meat boxes which they can then sell. The focuses on the importance the family place on a small, local abattoir, as this is a crucial factor in the animals' welfare but is often overlooked by the general public.

Holly & Jo - All Down Farm’s produce is eaten within a 20 mile radius of the farm. By engaging with their wider community, market gardeners Olivia and Henry believe not only does this help to strengthen the resilience of the farm itself but also helps rebuild local food networks, links and relationships - links that were once at the core of rural farming communities.

Michael - The lambing season on Michael's family's farm. Focusing on Michael's Mother, Sister Mel and her 3 year old daughter, this inter-generational perspective exemplifies the importance of women in the continuation of farming life.

(edit July 2019) Jo - The film is about grazing sheep on Northam Burrows Country Park. It will focus on farmer Ronald Griffey who has grazed sheep there for over 40 years and the rewards and challenges this gives him. Northam Burrows is an unusual landscape rich in plants and wildlife. As common land, it has a long history of grazing rights. Ronald and his family have a strong connection with the burrows and grazing sheep there. Ronald’s father had grazing rights on the burrows, and Ronald’s son now helps him.

"Rose has been farming all her life and now even in her mid seventies she is still caring for the young cattle and supporting on the farm.  I will tell Rose’s story through her daily routines on the farm and in the kitchen baking, as she prepares food and reminisces about her life. Lifelong Farmer will weave together archive material, intimate and personal recollections of being a woman in farming over many decades."
Linda Mason

"I'm excited to be part of this project, which will shine a light on Exmoor farming at an important and challenging time. I hope the film I make with my chosen farm will boost awareness of the need for small, local abattoirs, and how crucial they are for the welfare of the animals"

Film Making Ideas for Autumn

17/10/2016

With 43 days left to enter our Wild Shorts film making competition, now is the perfect time to get out and about in North Devon's Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and capture our stunning natural environment and wildlife on video.  Take a look at the ideas below for making your own outdoors autumn film:
1.  VISUAL
A film composed of aesthetic images with a music soundtrack.  Themes could include:
  • colours of autumn
  • reflections (make the most of the puddles when it rains)
  • close up and personal - get some real close up and macro shots of plants and animals that can be overlooked by the passerby
NB: make sure you have permission to use the music you choose - why not approach a local musician or band?

2. SCIENTIFIC
  • nature prepares for winter
  • a detailed study of a habitat or species - adaptation to environment
  • a seashore survey

3. INNOVATIVE
  • A timelapse of your favourite view - great skies this time of year!
  • A GoPro journey or unusual point of view
  • Use animation or puppetry to tell the story of a local habitat/species

4. COMMUNITY
  • a profile of a conservation group
  • interview with someone whose work is related to the environment within the AONB
  • documenting a conservation project

Remember to visit the competition page for all the rules and regulations - and please do contact us if you would like any advice.  Email northdevonmovingimage@outlook.com or call Amanda McCormack 01271 860610.

Young Wildlife TV Reporters at Croyde BioBlitz

19/9/2016

The NDMI Wild Shorts team spent a very busy day at Croyde BioBlitz, organised by Coastwise and North Devon Coast AONB on Saturday 17 September 2016. We were there promoting our Wild Shorts AONB film competition and giving film making tips and advice to potential competition entrants.

Our young producer, Dotty, ran some exciting film making activities for young wildlife fans and we can definitely see some potential in North Devon for a new generation of wildlife TV presenters!  Click on the video to watch a short clip of 9 year old Hannah interviewing Jonathan Fairhurst, North Devon National Trust's Head Ranger.  All the BioBlitz interviews are now online - visit our Youtube channel to watch!

Six Top Tips for Making a Short Film

11/8/2016

Here are six top tips to help you make a great short film for our North Devon Coast AONB Wild Shorts wildlife and environment film competition.
  1. Story is key - even documentaries have a story or storyline - make your film engaging for your audience so that right from the start they want to see it through.
  2. Sound - even if you don't use a presenter or voiceover, the sound is what gives your film atmosphere and emotion.  If you pick up wind noise from your camera or recording device don't just 'let it go'.  Think about replacing it with music (make sure you have permission) or a separately recorded soundtrack of atmospheric sounds or a commentary recorded in a quieter atmosphere.
  3. Keep it Steady - lots of wobbly shots can make your viewer feel unsettled.  If you don't have a tripod try resting your camera on a bag of rice.  If you are going for a handheld shot make sure you are steady - plant your feet firmly apart, lock your knees and keep your elbows tight in to your sides.  For low shots rest the camera on the ground or sit with your knees up and feet flat on the ground and rest the camea on your knees.  Breathe slowly and steadily and if you can lean on something stable like a tree or wall you can brace yourself.
  4. Style - this is what can make your film interesting and give it something others won't have.  Use a variety of shot sizes - close up, mid shot, wide shot and shot movements - pan, tilt, tracking, zoom.  Take time to frame your shot for the greatest impact.
  5. Science - especially important for Wild Shorts!  Make sure you do your research.  There is lots of information out there to help you get your facts right.  Go to the Wild Shorts competition page by clicking here to see a list of helpful resources for your research.  Or ask someone - there are many wildlife experts in the area.  You could drop in to the Braunton Countryside Centre or one of our local museums or libraries in north Devon.
  6. Keep it short.  Your entry for Wild Shorts must be between 2 and 4 minutes duration (including any titles and credits).  This may sound short when you think of telling a story but just think what powerful messages can be shared in a 20 second advert!
Watch this news page for more tips and we are always happy to chat on the telephone or by email if you need any help with your film.  Click here for contact details.

Thanks to the North Devon Coast AONB North Devon Moving Image is ready for action!

We are really delighted to have been awarded an SDF grant which will pay for IT equipment enabling us to produce short films in-house here at NDMI.

Our first film, which will be produced in January 2014, will look at life in Clovelly today. A visit to the historic north Devon fishing village is like stepping back in time so we are going to find out what it is like living there in 2014; is it a primitive way of life or do the villagers have all mod cons just like the rest of us?

One thing we do know is that there is no motor traffic in the village and we will be visiting Sue and Bart Kelly, who look after Clovelly's famous donkeys and finding out all about their contribution to every day life in north Devon today.
