FIRST PRIZE
This is a film about local artist Derek Spencer and his response to the question of why he feels the need to paint. It was shot at his studio in Landkey and on location at the Valley of the Rocks near Lynton.
The film was shot using a Canon 70D and edited in both Final Cut Express and Adobe Premiere Elements. THIRD PRIZE
Oscar Adams from Torrington introduces us to Big Al; town crier, punk rocker, Master Ambrose and former drag queen. Definitely one of North Devon's most colourful characters!
WARNING: this film contains a verbal sexual reference. Joe Bulmer from Appledore has sent us his fabulous short short A Day with an Auctioneer.
Joe visited South Molton's livestock market and got chatting with auctioneer Chris Clapham and Market Foreman, Michael Edwards.
Joe says "I chose South Molton’s livestock market because it’s one of the town’s major features yet very few people understand what goes on there. I learnt a lot in the brief time I worked there and was struck by the spirit and banter of the place. I used a Panasonic HX-DC1, I guess you’d call it a handicam. The footage I edited on iMovie with the help of my mac guru Gina. I’d been yearning to do make a film for some time and couldn’t decide on a subject. I guess the experience has taught me to film more and think less, if that makes sense." We LOVE Joe's film - it's fun, entertaining and gives a great insight into this important element of rural life in North Devon. Thanks Joe! Take a look at our short film about Matt the Hat (below) who sells second hand records at Discovery Music in Barnstaple to see what you can do with an iPad and a charismatic shopkeeper!

ECOND PRIZEA one minute film by Alice Bollen featuring Stephen Perham, fisherman and Clovelly Harbour Master.
Alice says "I chose Stephen Perham as my subject because he has such an interesting life. Stephen represents many generations; past, present and future, whose work is part of the fabric of rural North Devon tradition. I wanted to convey the feeling that for Stephen, bringing in the catch was as normal and everyday as driving to and from the office is for others. My film was shot on a Sony Handycam DCRHC40E and edited in Adobe Premiere Elements." FOURTH PRIZE
Made by Year 6 children from Goodleigh Primary School in North Devon.
The children said: "We decided to make the film to use our skills in the real world. We went to The Apple Store last year where we learnt how to edit using iMovie on an iMac and were excited to use these skills for the competition. We chose Chris as our colourful character because he delivers our post everyday, and always says "good morning" with a smile. We thought it was really cool that he is a volunteering DJ on the voice. It was really kind of him to let us come and see what he does.He also makes curries to help raise money for charities; he has cooked curry for our school to raise money which helped us to go on more school trips. When we went to his house it was filled with the scent of spices! Something else we found interesting about Chris was his Lotus because not many postmen, DJs have a flashy car in Barnstaple! He is an all round soulful person! We really enjoyed shadowing Chris to get all of our film footage and using the school iPads. We took lots of photos and films in order to get the film we had now and the hard part was choosing which ones to use. We also learnt that you need permission to use copyright songs and made sure that we found a royalty free track which suited Chris' style! We learnt lots about how to use iMovie on an iMac for example, how to cut music, fade in and out, use slow motion and many more skills. It took us a long time to edit the film and it was hard cutting it down to a minute. We enjoyed the project and are looking forward to getting even better at film making." This short film was shot at Croyde beach by Ewan Somerville and recognises the great work of North Devon's RNLI Lifeguards. Music composed by Ewan Somerville
Ewan worked with NDMI this year for his Pilton Community College work experience placement. Nice work Ewan! North Devon poet and Great British Eccentric Colin Shaddick talks about Clare Balding, Tarka Trail, cycling strangers and gives us an original haiku to meditate on.
